A day of Northern Wainwrights with a lot of steep climbs but there are wonderful views, and Mungrisdale Common gives a wonderful panorama of nearly the whole walk.

After a quick detour up Latrigg, the route follows the road through Millbeck. It is possible to avoid this by contouring above the hamlet, but it involves yet more up and down and makes the day even longer.

Take care on Dodd, as it possible to add considerably to your journey by using the wrong forestry tracks. And you need to have all your energy ready for the steep climb up Carl Side before the out and back to Long Side!

After returning to Carl Side, begin on the zigzag path towards Skiddaw but cut East across the scree on a good path to join the big path from Skiddaw to Little Man. The view from Little Man should make up for the frustration of the out-and-back route.

It's a lovely run down from Skiddaw to Dash Beck before a bit of a slog to Great Calva.

After Great Calva, go down to the sheepfold in Wiley Gill, stay West of the small stream ahead, and continue down a muddy track to the Caldew stream. Turn upstream and there is a good crossing point after about 20 metres.

Mungrisdale "peak" is best identified using a gps! Then climb to Blencathra before descending again to the Sheepfolds and Guidestone over Glenderatera Beck. From the Guidestone walk SW, keeping to the right of the stream on boggy ground. When you meet a wall, turn South to reach the 715m Lonscale peak. From there go West until you find the path going down the Western slopes of Whit Beck, back to the car park.

Lonscale is steep at the end of the day: it could be avoided by visiting this peak earlier in the day from Little Man, but that involves more "out and back". If you follow this alternative plan, after descending from Blencathra, you could simply walk back to the car park along the Cumbria Way which passes through this section of the Northern Fells..
