This day in the Southern Wainwright fells begins with a stiff climb to Base Brown. There are two alternative ascents. Wainwright describes a direct route past the Hanging Stone, or you can continue up Sour Milk Gill until you reach the flatter ground and then go NE to the summit.

The route continues along clear paths to Green Gable, steeply up and down Kirk Fell, and again steeply up Great Gable. Note that the true summit of Kirk Fell is the south-western of the two.

From Great Gable there are multiple routes to the area SW of Styhead Tarn. From here, you need to find a route NE to reach the broad ridge leading to Seathwaite Fell. Note that Wainwright's summit (at 601m) is lower than the two peaks shown as Great Slack on the OS maps.

There is a clearer path returning towards Sprinkling Tarn where you join a major path towards Angle Tarn. To find Rossett PIke it is easiest to continue SE a little and then divert along the ridge, though you may choose to return by a more direct route to Angle Tarn.

Return uphill to the major junction below Esk Hause and turn right to reach Allen Crags and onwards to Glaramara.

The remainder of the route involves careful navigation, with few paths. The primary aim is to find Tarn at Leaves, from which Wainwright's chosen summit (Bessyboot) is easy to find. Stay right of the rocky crags of Combe Head , Combe Door, and Rosthwaite Cam, but stay above the wall on the Western edge of Stonethwaite Fell. Return the way you have come, but turn West before Combe Door to join a pth between Combe Head and Raven Crag.

You may have a strong feeling of relief as you locate the path down the side of Hind Gill. It's not the longest of the days, but I found the navigational challenges of the final sectiion were hard work!
